One of the most frustrating comments that I hear from sales teams throughout the process is that if you invest into a solar system that you are buying a "maintenance free system". Now whether this is an intention ploy or just an unaware sales team, the statement is not true. Everything we buy needs some form of maintenance. From something as simple as a BBQ all the way to your home or business, regular maintenance is require to ensure proper function for the intended use. Solar Panels are not different. A unmaintained solar system is costing you valuable energy production and decreasing the efficiency of your investment.
The other misconception is that the Operation and Maintenance contract that you sign covers 100% of the Operation and Maintenance of the system for the life of the contract. Again, depending on the company that is installing your system, this can also be a point of deception. Most contracts are upfront about what they cover such as; installation quality, inverters, panels, monitoring etc . However, more often then not, deep in the fine print is the list of items that are excluded. This is where you find out what they will not cover such as solar array cleaning and vegetation removal(if you have a ground mounted system). These items fall under the responsibility of the system owner and are an additional and often unrecognized cost of the installation and long term maintenance. We highly recommend reviewing your current contract.
